Tuning World Bodensee 2024: A Glimpse Behind the Scenes of Car Enthusiasts
In May 2024, I was able to attend the Tuning World Bodensee in Friedrichshafen – an event that excites the hearts of car enthusiasts while also welcoming lots of families every year. When I unexpectedly received my press accreditation, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I was eager to dive into this unique subculture. Although cars are not my primary interest, I was curious to understand what makes this culture so appealing to many people.
A New Experience
The Tuning World Bodensee is not just an exhibition; it’s more like a festival, showcasing the creativity and passion of countless tuners. The drift racing demonstrations are a particular highlight each year. The roaring engines and the smell of burning rubber create an overwhelming experience, an atmosphere that is unlike anything else. This also opened up new perspectives for my photography.
Exploring New Photographic Challenges
I decided to capture the full scope of the event – from still moments in the exhibition halls to the thrilling action in the drift area and tuning show. I used my Sony A7ii and, with the fast autofocus of the 70-200mm f4 telephoto lens, I was able to capture both the fine details of the modified cars and the high-energy drift racing action. Indoors, I often switched to the 50mm f1.8 (Sony) to capture the unique and equally special atmosphere presented to me. I also tested the Cinematic Mode of the iPhone 15, which performed impressively, even with hectic drift shots.
I was particularly impressed by the Asian import cars and the creativity behind the tuners’ modifications. The diversity and individuality of the cars on display, each mod thoroughly detailed, were reminiscent of a museum exhibit.
The Atmosphere and the People
The atmosphere at the Tuning World was relaxed, although things got a bit hectic in the drift area. Luckily, the Red Bull media area provided plenty of refreshments and a great view over the entire drift zone. This also gave me the chance to practice new photography techniques, such as panning. With this technique, you use a longer exposure and move the camera to follow the car, creating a dynamic motion blur effect that gives the image an incredible sense of speed and energy.
I also had some insightful conversations with other photographers who specialize in this niche, and they offered great advice on how to capture perfect shots in such fast-paced settings.
Conclusion: Try Something Different!
For me, the Tuning World Bodensee was an exciting journey into a culture I knew little about. Even though I’m not a hardcore car enthusiast or tuner, this event taught me the value of trying something new and stepping out of my comfort zone. Sometimes, the most unexpected and random situations bring the greatest joy.
The photos I took aren’t just a documentation of the event; they’re also a testament to the emotions and passion that run deep in tuning culture. I’m excited to share my experiences and the best shots in the gallery on my portfolio.
